The Food and Drug Administration has warned that men taking Viagra may be more likely to get impotence than other erectile dysfunction drugs, according to a new report. The report, published by the New York University School of Public Health, examined the possible link between Viagra and erectile dysfunction.
Viagra, also known as sildenafil, is the drug used by more than 400 million men around the world to treat erectile dysfunction, including impotence, heart disease, and low blood pressure.

According to a press release, a new study released last week by the National Institutes of Health, showed that Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs may increase the risk for developing heart disease, blood clots, and stroke.
"Heart disease is one of the most common health conditions that people have," the agency said in its report, "and men who have it are likely to have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease."
The findings are based on a large case-control study conducted in 2012, when Viagra was first prescribed to more than 7 million men.
"Viagra and diabetes are highly prevalent diseases in this population," the FDA's statement said.
Viagra is the most prescribed drug to treat erectile dysfunction, according to the agency, and is the only drug on the market that has a proven ability to treat impotence. The drug has the same side-effect profile as other erectile dysfunction drugs and is taken only when needed.
Viagra is used to treat men who are unable to achieve or maintain an erection, or who have difficulty in achieving one.
"Men taking this medication should be on a strict daily or weekly medication schedule," the statement said. "There is not enough evidence of the effectiveness of this drug for treating erectile dysfunction, and it is not recommended for men taking other medications."

In the study, men taking Viagra experienced a reduction in erections more than half a year after starting the medication.

"This is a very encouraging finding," said Dr. Lisa L. Goldstein, a urologist at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, who was not involved in the research.
According to the new study, men who take Viagra may have a greater risk for heart disease, blood clots, and stroke than men who do not take the drug.
"We are continuing to monitor patients for these potential risks and are working with regulatory agencies to address the issue," said Dr. Steven N. Kocoras, the study's lead author. "The FDA is putting forward new recommendations that will address the increased risk of cardiovascular disease in patients taking Viagra."
The drug's side effects are mild and tend to be mild at best.
Dr. Elizabeth S. Gifford, an assistant professor of urology at Johns Hopkins University, said, "It's a rare condition but it is important that men who take Viagra who have been taking this medication have a careful history of heart disease and blood clots."
Gifford said she is concerned that a drug like Viagra may lead to a greater risk of stroke and heart attack in some patients.
"The increased risk is something that could be a cause for concern for men who take Viagra and their partners," she said. "I don't think Viagra is the right drug to treat this condition."
